about

"A Game Of Chance" was my 89th album, recorded and originally released in late August / early September in 2008.

Actually, this album was much the result of a long and inspiring conversation I had with my old friend, experimental musician and radio host Alexander Spechtenhauser, at the open air festival "Night Of The Progs" in July 2008, which was headlined by Tangerine Dream and - most important for me - Klaus Schulze and Lisa Gerrard.

However, if You expect anything in the vein of these heros of mine, then "A Game Of Chance" is rather the wrong album; instead the music was inspired Alexander's idea for a sound installation in a park in his hometown - as far as I remember based on wind chimes, playing aleatoric music in the trees.

So the big theme that provides a link between all the tracks of the album is indeed that every composition is based on a certain degree of randomness - or chance!
Which does not mean that the music is completely random from start to end. Rather, some kind of random process provided the basic sonic events which the pieces are built on, but of course these elements were developed further and put into some shape in a second step.

The method to generate the random musical events was different for each track (actually, most of the titles hint at those methods), and depending on the "technique" employed, the results turned out rather differently (which accounts for the fact that the individual tracks are stylistically quite divers).

In the end, some of the compositions tend more towards minimal music (or maybe new age) while others can better be described as abstract ambient.

I do confess that today I don't remember the actual source of randomness behind all of the tracks, but the opener, "A Game Of Winds" was very much my attempt to emulate how Andreas' installation would probably have sounded like, and the aleatoric element was how often and how loud the idividual (virtual) chimes did ring (which was determined by a comupter algorithm - so it's one of the few cases when I actually employed algorthmic composition).

In "A Game Of Lights" I used my trusty old sound software "Metasynth" to convert some (random) digital pictures (pixels, in other words: light from a computer screen) into sound.

Metasynth also was employed in "A Game Of Different Winds" - but I forgot the actual way I brought in the wind element (...pictures of storms maybe? ...charts of atmospheric currents? Maybe something like that.)

In "A Game Of Hands" I myself served as the "random generator" - or more precisely my not very well developed performing skills, so that whole track is improvised and played all by hand (on piano, mostly).

What exactly had been the sources of chance in "A Game Of Strings" and the long title track that fills CD 2, unfortunately has slipped from my memory in the remaining 9 years...
