BEAUTIFUL YOU ARE (1995 - 1996)

This collection of early tracks is somewhat difficult - difficult to digest for my usual audiences (I believe), as the music is quite different from most of my later efforts.

In fact, I attempted to write pieces in a conventional, middle-of-the-road-ish way, and with hindsight, only my lack of skills saved a few from being completely generic.

Still, the album contains moments of (indeed) beauty to balance out the cheesiness of some other sections, plus some of the tracks mean a lot to me on a personal - autobiographical - level (and regardless of their artistic shortcomings or merits).

Let's give these tracks a closer look:

Some of them (and indeed those which stood the test of time better) are vaguely inspired by the likes of Mike Oldfield, Vangelis or Andreas Vollenweider.

Others rather resemble chamber (pop) music, some are takes on middle-of-the-road radio pop songs, the better of these vaguely bringing Sade or George Michael to mind (minus the singer, of course - but wait: we're going to speak about the absent singer in a minute!)

A few tracks also cross the line to sheer elevator muzak, or resemble a slightly bizarr variety of circus or vaudeville music.

There are also three bonus tracks: these were recorded around the same time, with a different background though, and they are pure 80s electro pop - however in one case using some elements of Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite". And even if these have some recording flaws, they are (if one is inclined to such music) the most fun on this album...

OK, so why would I want to write such music?

Actually, in mid 1995 I've met a (female) singer who's beautiful voice and general musical gifts I adored (yet these were not the only things I found adorable about her) and we started to meet sporadically, to make music together.
However, it soon turned out that we had different ideas, as I already back then was rather experimentally inclined.
Still, the collaboration seemed very important to me, and I made a strong effort to come up with some music the lady would accept to lend her voice to. And many tracks on this album (not all, though) are such efforts. From the fact that they are all instrumental you can see that they were deemed useless. ;-)

Still, the effort wasn't completely wasted: a couple of months later, we married, and after more then twenty years, we still are a reasonably happy couple most of the time. :-D
Plus, in the end, my wife lent her voice to quite a few tracks over the years (which can be found on some of my probably more accomplished albums...).
