about

In my "nearly complete catalogue" I once wrote about "Challenge 29":

* * *

86. CHALLENGE 29
2007: The final album to be included into "No single Single" was also specially designed for Alex Spechtenhausers radio show [like "A Calm But Steady Flow" a year earlier].
Stylistically, it walks the line between commercial and experimental, and between dance and traditional electronica...

* * *

To explain this in a bit more detail:

My old friend Alexander Spechtenhauser - an experimental ambient musician and radio host from Innsbruck, Austria - was the first to be so kind to play some of my music on (then still terrestial!) radio - actually, at one point he even dedicated a whole show to it!

However, he had a strict rule: he would never play any music in his show that was faster than 130 bpm and that had a steady four-to-the-floor techno beat!

After he informed me about that, I had one of my little crazy ideas: I attempted to come up with an album full of tracks which all had a tempo of 129 bpm and the dreaded dance beats and still was so experimental, weird and (hopefully) interesting that Alex would play it in his show (...he liked it - at least he told me so - but didn't play it anyway in the end).

So, it was both a challenge to myself to come up with something cool within these limits and to Alexander, or the limits of his musical taste. (...29 of course hints at the chosen tempo).

Even I didn't manage to seduce Alex to play the album, I still though it was quite an achievment, and always regarded it as one of the best albums in my catalogue...
