about

14. HEARTBEAT (1996 to 1997)

In my "...(nearly) complete catalogue" from 2007 I described this album rather briefly:

"Old school electronica with flavours of New Age, World Music and Ambient; contains five different versions of the title track (call it remixes, if You like...)"

I'd like to add - even if it may not actually seem like it, if you look at the resulting music - that the five different versions of "Heartbeat" (the track) are a direct consequence of my - then recent - first encounter with music by The Future Sound of London and The Orb:

A girl I knew gave me a couple of CDs by them (including "Lifeforms") back in 1996, which to me was a huge eye-opener and forever changed the way I looked at contemporary electronica, dance, chill-out, triphop, ambient (whatever). But especially dance (even if - with hindsight - this music wasn't really dance music; so maybe I should say: music played in clubs - including the chill-out room).

Up to that point I had not a lot of respect for "techno" (and all that kind of stuff) - for the main reason that I simply only had encountered rather cheap examples of it. I would listen to prog-rock, 70s electronica, jazz, classical music - whatever; but "techno"...?!? Keep that away from me! ;-)

So, that changed, and it also changed the way I looked at the concept of remixing - I started to appreciate the idea (provided it was well done).

With the title track of this album I made a conscious attempt to produce "up to date" electronica; of course, the results sounded nothing much like it for various reasons (see above). Still - I always liked the resulting music anyway, it's actually quite enjoyable as long as you don't expect it to sound like FSOL... ;-)
