DRONES, ATMOSPHERES & DREAMSCAPES
is an ongoing series of releases - featuring exactly what it says!

HYMNS TO THE DAWN owes its existence to a somewhat difficult circumstance - in the summer of this year, there was a longer period during which I couldn't order new CD-r editions, and therefore couldn't fulfil several orders. In the case of one listener in particular (who had placed a rather big order), this situation caused him a prolonged waiting time.
To make up for this, I decided to record a few soundscapes, create a mix from these and send it to him as an "advance bonus item" to reward his patience.

This - rather quickly produced - ambient mix turned out quite nicely, and when I found that I enjoyed to listen to it myself repeatedly, I considered to use some of it for a later official release.

At the same time, I wanted to keep the original mix unique for that one listener, and also wanted to reserve some sections for other purposes (for example, there was a few minutes of improvisation with my good friend Mathias Brüssel in that initial version which we probably will use for a future album release under our "La Mansarde Hermetique" monicker....).

Because of such considerations, I descended into the vaults of my archives once more to look for suitable music to replace a few sections - and was amazed to find quite a few previously unreleased and very nice ambient pieces that I once had shared within my old group at LastFM (which long since ceased to exist).
These older tracks - I think they are from 2008, but they as well might be a year or two older or younger - complemented the mix very nicely.

In one of the older tracks, You can briefly hear the voice of my daughter Hannah. Even at the time when I recorded what now has become "Part 2", the recording of her voice was older still, from when she was little.

Today she's almost 24 years old, and when she recently came to visit us again, she brought along her flute, and we recorded some music together.
One of the results of this session is the bonus track, "The Gift", based on mulit-layered, partly processed recordings of Hannah improvisation over a beautiful little motive she made up...

Another significant element of this release is the visual side:
Already months ago visual artist (and listener!) STEVEN LEAK and I had agreed on collaborating, and with this project, I thought the music and his visuals would complement each other perfectly!

For this reason I decided to produce a limited physical edition - just a small, limited run of 6-panel digipaks for serious collectors - that would provide a beautiful stage to feature Steven's artwork (actually photographs taken through pieces of ice).

One recurring theme in Steven's visuals is the dawn, or the morning sky, and this actually inspired the title of the album...
